Hi,

This is a regular mailing intended to improve communication within the Search and Rescue community in Alberta. It's going out to over 130 e-mail addresses that are listed as the primary contact of SAR Alberta member groups or which were requested to be added to the mailing list. Here are some of the happenings in SAR in Alberta:

Swiss Air 111 Presentation

On Monday April 3, at 1300 hours, Inspector Latham of the RCMP will give a presentation on on the Swiss Air Investigation, at the Ramada Hotel (old Edmonton Inn) 11834 Kingsway Ave, Edmonton. The presentation is open to all SAR workers. You must have some ID showing your SAR affiliation to attend.

Provincial SAR Conference

Don't forget the 4th Annual Provincial SAR Conference is coming up fast: April 7-9 2000. It's being held at the Harvard Business Park (old Penhold base just south of Red Deer).

Your group and past attendees have been mailed information packets and registration forms.

First Aid Courses in Medicine Hat

South East Alberta Search and Rescue Association (SEASARA) is holding the following courses:

April 29-30, Standard First Aid (non-member fee: $85.00)

May 27-28, Wilderness First Aid (non-member fee: $100.00)

SAR Instructors Directory

The Standards and Training Committee is calling for contact information for all instructors that put on courses for SAR groups, with an eye to putting together a directory that can be shared by all. So if you teach SAR course (such as SAR Fundamentals) or a specialty or if you can recommend an instructor for a related field (such as Avalanche Awareness), please send in contact information (name, course, phone, fax, e-mail, mail).

Parkland SAR Course Schedule

Parkland Search and Rescue plans the following training exercises:

April 3, Maps - the self study package presented in a classroom environment 7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.

April 8, Practical application of rescue techniques 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

April 22, GPS - introduction and practical exercises 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

April 29, Compass - from developing basic skills to practical application, drawing of maps . 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

May 7, Sign awareness - introduction to man tracking 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

May 15, Understanding the Alzheimer patient

May 20, Rescue exercise for those who have had rescue and recovery training 9:00a.m. - 3:00p.m.

May 29 - Urban searching 7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.

June 3 - Mock search - All Day

June 5 - Wilderness survival 7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.

June 17-18 , Survival Weekend

Schedule of SAR Alberta Board Meetings

The SAR Alberta board moves its meetings between Calgary, Red Deer, and Edmonton in an attempt to balance travel time and to be closer the members it represents. Meetings are always open to everyone in the SAR community.

The meeting dates for the coming year are:

Sunday, June 11, 2000 12:00-16:00, Edmonton.

Saturday, September 9, 2000, 12:00-16:00, Red Deer.

Saturday, November 4, 2000, 12:00-16:00, Calgary.

Saturday, January 13, 2001, 12:00-16:00, Red Deer.

Saturday, March 10, 2001, 12:00-16:00, Calgary.
