Hi, This is a regular mailing intended to improve communication within the Search and Rescue community in Alberta. It's going out to over 160 e-mail addresses that are listed as the primary contact of SAR Alberta member groups or which were requested to be added to the mailing list. If you want to be added or removed from the list, please send mail to sara-happenings-request@castrov.cuug.ab.ca. Here are some of the happenings in SAR in Alberta:
This newsletter's current editor, Kristine Borrowes, has had to withdraw due to other commitments. Brett Wuth wuth@acm.org is acting editor. We call for a volunteer to write and edit future SARA Happenings. Submissions come from readers, board members, and by phoning local teams. You should have ready access to e-mail. Time commitment is about 6 hour / month. Contact: Brett Wuth wuth@acm.org

The 2001 Provincial SAR Conference is being held April 27-29 Rocky Mountain YMCA Outdoor Centre, Seebe, Alberta (1 hour west of Calgary on Highway 1). Check out and download the registration package at SAR Alberta's web site http://www.saralberta.org/ Contact: Brad Marshall bmarsh@telusplanet.net
Gary Renshaw gary@spots.ab.ca submitted this item. Foothills recently purchased some rolls of survey flagging that were custom printed "SEARCH & RESCUE" every 60 cm or so. These will be great for flagging routes and search areas unambiguously. Unfortunately the biodegradable tape cannot be printed so this is standard vinyl. If SARA or its members are interested, the tape is available in minimum orders of 100 rolls from Butler Survey Supplies Ltd., In January each SAR Team was mailed the annual form for submitting SAR Teams basic information for 2000 regarding membership, percentage of hours, missions and results. To enable SAR Alberta to continue approaching government and other entities on your behalf, for funding and other support, it is important that we are able to supply real data regarding our provincial SAR activities and efforts. Rob Davidson has graciously offered his willingness to administer
stats for SAR Alberta and is terribly under-worked right now. Please get
those forms in. Contact: Rob Davidson rdavidsn@telusplanet.net
Thank you to all those who attended our Grant Meeting in Red Deer on Feb 10th. It was great to see so much participation and sharing in meetings the common provincial SAR needs. The deadline set by Alberta Disaster Services was March 7th. Please submit any training course/workshop/event information for inclusion
in the Provincial Training Calendar to Brad Marshall bmarsh@telusplanet.net

At the 5th annual SAR Alberta Provincial Conference in Seebe, Alberta April 27 to 29, 2001, the SAR Alberta Annual General Meeting (AGM) is being held, starting at 1030, Saturday April 28. During the AGM, the current bylaws call for the election of President and Secretary, both a two year term. Duties of these positions are: President: Supervises the affairs of the Board; when present, chairs all General Meetings, Board Meetings and Executive Committee Meetings; is an ex officio member of all committees, except the nominating committee; Act as spokesperson for the association; and carries out other duties assigned by the Board. Secretary: Attends all general meetings, Board Meetings and Executive Committee Meetings, keeps accurate minutes of these meetings;has charge of the Board's correspondence; makes sure a record of names and addresses of all members is kept;makes sure all notices of various meetings are sent; makes sure annual fees are collected and deposited; files the annual return, changes in the Board members of the organization, amendments in the bylaws and other incorporating documents with the Corporate Registry; and carries out other duties assigned by the Board. Nominations will be accepted at the AGM, and must be made by a person who is a member in good standing within a SAR Alberta member group. If the nominated person is not in attendance, it is desirable to have a document from that person confirming their intention to run for the nominated position. Any person who wishes to run for the position of President or Secretary may forward a one page information sheet outlining their background, platform, etc, which will then in turn be distributed to the SAR Alberta membership via the web page and other means. This is not mandatory, but designed to assist any candidates in the sharing of information. Please forward any such one page documents to Ric Henderson at: email ric.henderson@gov.ab.ca, or fax 403 340-5210, OR mail to 207, 4920-51 St., Red Deer, Ab, T4N 6K8. At the AGM, prior to the elections, a proposed bylaw change will be presented to the membership which may alter the election process. This resolution calls for the position of Vice President, President, and Past President to all be one year terms, with the Vice President moving to President, then Past, allowing for continuity in leadership. If passed, this bylaw change could necessitate the election of both President and Vice President at the 2001 AGM. Contact: Ric Henderson, Nominations Committee ric.henderson@gov.ab.ca
